AFQ reaches historic agreement with Women's Football Alliance

Written by AFQ Media | Oct 16, 2025 11:56:15 PM

American Football Queensland is proud to announce a new international partnership with Women's Football Alliance.

WFA International has been at the forefront of expanding women's tackle football through international competition and development. The International alliance currently consists of 8 countries - Mexico, Canada, the Netherlands, Honduras, Morocco, Colombia, Brazil, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. AFQ becomes the ninth affiliation to enter into an international partnership.

AFQ currently leads the way in Australia with a four team women's tackle competition, with possible expansion teams in coming seasons. Due to the current climate of women's tackle football in Australia, there are scant opportunities available for players to play representative football at the next level.

2027 will see WFA Team United come to Queensland for a week-long training and development camp and a game versus the AFQ Sundevils representative squad. Sundevils will then travel to Canton, Ohio to compete at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in an international showcase event.

"We're securing the future of women's tackle football," states Director of Women's Sport Alex Ahrens. "These are very exciting opportunities, for both players and coaches. International pathways give something for grassroots athletes to strive for in a code that traditionally has very little international affairs."

WFA and AFQ will also begin development on a player exchange program that would see international athletes being hosted in local clubs for a season, and AFQ players doing the same with WFA teams. The offset seasons (AFQ runs Sept-Dec, WFA April-July) are ideal for any tackle athlete that wants to gain valuable individual experience.

AFQ are currently working on a 5 year plan to expand women's football at the grassroots level as well, with a club U17 flag football gala tournament that hopes to expand to a fully fledged competition next year followed by U17 5 a side tackle in coming years to continue driving recruitment and development into the open women's competition.
