Announcing The Kristy Moran AFQ Excellence Award: Celebrating a Legend in Queensland & Australian Gridiron

The Queensland Sundevils are thrilled to announce the creation of the, a prestigious honour to be presented to the Queensland player judged as the best and fairest at the conclusion of each National Championship season. This award celebrates the extraordinary career and legacy of Kristy Moran, the legendary #6, whose jersey will be retired after she calls time on her illustrious career.

Kristy Moran's contributions to the Queensland Sundevils and the Australian Outbacks national team are unparalleled. As captain, she has led the Sundevils in every game they have ever played, spanning through the 2014, 2016, 2018, 2023 (State of Origin), and 2024 seasons. As a captain, Kristy’s leadership and prowess on-field have been instrumental in shaping the success and spirit of the team and American Football across the state and country.

In addition to her incredible career with the Queensland Sundevils, Kristy made history with the Australian Outback team when she became the first female player to score a touchdown for Team Australia. Kristy also served as national team captain in 2017, showcasing her exceptional skills and dedication to the sport on the international stage.

Kristy's impressive career extends beyond Australian borders. In 2017, she played for the Chicago Force in the Women's Football Alliance (WFA) and was selected in the First Team All-American squad, cementing her status as one of the best players in the world.

Her tenure with the QLD Sundevils Flag team in 2023 and 2024 further exemplifies her versatility and commitment to Gridiron. As the best running back in the country, Kristy Moran has set the benchmark for excellence in American football here in Australia.

To celebrate Kristy's incredible career and contributions, the Kristy Moran AFQ Excellence Award will be announced and celebrated at the Queensland Sundevils presentation lunch on Monday, August 4th. This presentation ceremony will mark a significant milestone in Queensland Gridiron, immortalising Kristy's legacy and contribution to the sport.

"The establishment of the Kristy Moran AFQ Excellence Award is a monumental step in celebrating the legacy of one of the greatest players in Australian American Football history. This award not only honours Kristy's remarkable career but also inspires future generations to strive for excellence." Said Queensland President James Cowlishaw.

Current Sundevils coach Kellie Hopkins has been instrumental in the creation of the annual award, saying her achievements and dedication to growing the sport here in Australia deserved to be recognised and celebrated. "Kristy's dedication, leadership, and talent have been unparalleled. This award not only celebrates her achievements but also sets a standard for our players to aspire to."

“Historically, Queensland has not given out campaign awards, however this year marks the start of a new tradition with the Kristy Moran AFQ Excellence Award, reflecting a group decision to honour their best and fairest players. As Coach and a long-time fan of Kristy’s commitment to the sport on and off-field, I couldn’t think of a better person to name our best and fairest award after.” Hopkins said.
